The Redmi series of smartphones is an important one for Xiaomi especially in India and china where it sells millions of these phones every year. The Redmi 4 was a great phone for the price and this year Xiaomi is slated to release the Redmi 5 in china on December 7th. There are lot of expectations on how this phone is going to be and so let’s take a look at the rumored specifications and features of this phone.
The Redmi 5 has official images that confirm that it has an 18:9 display and leaks point to it being a 5.7 inch HD+ IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720X1440 pixels. Which points to it carrying an overall better screen to body ratio with shrunken down top and bottom bezels that wasn’t found on its previous iterations. This is an interesting proposition as it one of the first phone’s sporting the bezeless look in the budget segment.
The phone is also rumored to launch with a snapdragon 450 or 625. The Snapdragon 450 seems more likely as the previous Redmi 4 has a Snapdragon 435 processor in it and Xiaomi probably should follow it up with another Snapdragon 400 series processor. The phone also seems to pack a 3200mAh battery that is significantly smaller than the 4100mAh battery of the Redmi 4. The phone might have a plus variant that could sport a Snapdragon 625 or 630 processor and the plus variant also seems to pack a more beafier 4000mAh battery cell. There are 3 configurations planned for the non plus Redmi 5 at 2 GB Ram and 16 GB storage, 3 GB Ram and 32 GB storage and 4 GB Ram and 64 GB storage.
The camera specifications that leaked point to a 12MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture with phase detection auto focus and a 5MP front facing camera with an aperture of f/2.0. The plus variant is expected to release with a 16MP rear shooter and 13MP front facing shooter. The cameras can also record up to 1080p 30fps videos.
The phones also have a rear mounted finger print scanner and are expected to have aluminum constructed bodies. Dimensions of the phone seem to be 151.8X72.8X7.7mm with a weight of 157 grams. The phone is also confirmed to launch in three different colors. Blue, Rose Gold and Black or Dark Grey.
The phone is slated to run MIUI 9 out of the box with Android 7.1.2 Nougat. MIUI is a heavily skinned version of android and has a ton of features and customizability options.

There is also an IR blaster present that can be used to control home appliances such as a TV, Air conditioner, set-top box and so on with your phone instead of reaching for the remote every time. The 3.5mm headphone jack also seems to be present at the top, so that’s not gone yet which is good thing. The phone also is rumored to be carrying a micro USB port and not USB C which is a bummer but not a deal breaker by any means.
Pricing and availability
Leaks suggest that the price is around CNY 1,399 which equals to around US$ 211 and around 13000 INR. Sales begin on December the 10th in china.
