Xiaomi has recently been hitting it out of the park with its Redmi 4, Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4A. With these handsets gaining huge popularity in the market, Xiaomi is reportedly gearing up to soon launch the successors of these three models. In the past few days, several rumors have been afloat regarding the Redmi 5, Redmi Note and Redmi 5A, with Redmi 5 grabbing more attention than the rest.
Xiaomi has, for long, been known as a privately owned company that prioritizes value for money in their smartphones. The company also makes TVs, fitness trackers, tablets and air purifiers. Xiaomi smartphones and tablets boast of the MIUI firmware based on Android operating system and are mainly available in India through online flash sales. Coming to the Redmi 5, while some information regarding its specifications has been doing rounds on the internet lately, a leak about the expected release date has recently come up.
The information about Xiaomi Redmi 5 first leaked through press images that were posted on a social site called Weibo. As per the leaked images, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is expected to have 5.0-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. While earlier leaks of the smartphone suggested that it would have a poly carbonate body, the latest images indicate that users can expect the device to have a full metal body with curved glass display. It would run the MIUI 9, based on Google Android 7.1.1 Nougat, out of the box. However, some rumors also claim that it would, like other Redmi smartphones, be using the outdated version of Android, namely Android Marshmallow.
Coming to the battery of the smartphone, the leaks hint at the Redmi 5 being powered by a 3,680 mAh battery. The device has also very recently been spotted on the Chinese certification website called TENNA, having the model number MAE136. The TENNA listing, however, indicates that the smartphone will house a 4,000 mAh battery instead. It is also believed that the Xiaomi Redmi 5 would boast of the Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support.
As for camera specifications, the smartphone is rumored to sport a 13 megapixel rear camera while having a 5 megapixel selfie shooter in the front. Also, features like a dual-tone LED flash, exposure compensation, continuous shooting, High Dynamic Range and phase detection autofocus might also be on the cards. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 is rumored to include sensors such as the gravity sensor, distance sensor as well as an ambient light sensor. While TENNA said that the smartphone would sport a fingerprint scanner, latest leaked images of the smartphone show no such possibility. The smartphone would have dual-SIM support. The connectivity options on the Redmi 5 consist of the dual SIMs, WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), 4G LTE, GPS, Bluetooth 4.1 along with a microUSB port. The Redmi 5 also houses a dedicated microSD card slot that can give up to 128 GB of additional storage.
RAM, Storage, Processor
Like its predecessor Redmi 4, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is expected to be available in two variants in terms of the processor- one variant having a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset (with the Adreno 506 GPU) and the other one sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 (with Adreno 508 GPU). TENNA predicts an octa-core processor with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz in the smartphone. The smartphone would also come in a number of variants based on the memory configurations. In the Snapdragon 625 version, the smartphones comes as either a 3 GB RAM+ 16 GB storage variant, or a 3 GB RAM+ 32 GB storage variant. The Snapdragon 630 allows a little more variety, consisting of a 3 GB RAM+32 GB storage variant, a 4 GB RAM+32 GB storage variant and a 4 GB RAM+64 GB storage variant. The TENNA listing also suggested that the Xiaomi Redmi 5 might be available in the market in a variety of colour variants, such as matte black, dark grey, gold as well as rose gold.
Price and release date
Of course, the price of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 would depend on the variant based on the memory configuration that one purchases. Among the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 version, the 3 GB RAM+16 GB storage variant is expected to be available at around Rs. 8,160 while the 3 GB RAM+32 GB storage variant should be priced at Rs. 9,875. As for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 version, the expected price of the 3 GB RAM+ 32 GB storage variant is Rs. 10,445 while that of the 4 GB RAM+ 32 GB storage variant is Rs. 11,395. The 4 GB RAM+ 64 GB storage variant is expected to be priced at Rs. 12,345. The expected release date of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is unfortunately still a matter of debate. While some sources are claiming that the flagship model will be launched anytime between now and October 2017, others are suggesting that it will not be launched in India any time before late December, 2017.
Based on the leaks about the Xiaomi Redmi 5, a crude comparison can be drawn between the Redmi 5 and the Xiaomi Redmi 4. Though at first sight, the pricing of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 might appear considerably steep in comparison to its predecessor, it is also a fact that Xiaomi has provided a number of improvements and fresh features through the Redmi 5. For starters, the Redmi 5 would run the latest MIUI version that is the MIUI 9, an upgrade from the MIUI 8 that Redmi 4 runs on. Another welcome upgrade is processor make, going from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 in the Redmi 4 to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and 630 chipsets in the Redmi 5. Also, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 might be Xiaomi’s first flagship model to sport the 1080 display.
Some of the biggest plus points about the Xiaomi Redmi 5 are the dedicated microSD slot and the large variety of memory configurations. The leaks have raised the expectations of smartphone enthusiasts pretty high. If they come out to be true, the Redmi 5 would offer great value for money.
